Student Visits To India

Avion Holidays has been organising student visits to Kerala for the past five years. The trips are designed in a way that will give the students an opportunity to experience the rich and varied culture of a part of India which has become popular as a tourist destination. The students would be escorted by a teacher who would be assisted by our local guides and the tour operator. There are lots of opportunities for students to interact with local communities and to participate in activities far beyond the norm.

A typical itinerary to Kerala is shown below:

Day 1: Heathrow – Trivandrum

Day 2: Arrive Trivandrum in the early morning and transfer to Resort.
During the day students will be able to relax and have ayurvedic massages. Later, take a short walk to the fishermen’s village nearby. Students generally tend to take small gifts such as cuddly toys, little children shoes and clothes, books etc to distribute to the less well off.
In the evening take a stroll along Kovalam Beach and enjoy a meal at the Coconut Grove in Kovalam. A special Thali dinner will be organized for the Group by the manager, Sunil Collam, and his wonderful chef.  There will be the traditional greetings with jasmine flowers, fresh coconut drinks, incense and of course the welcoming smiles of the locals. Overnight at the chosen resort.

Day 3: Day excursion to Kanyakumari which is at the southernmost tip of the Indian Peninsula where the Arabian Sea meets the Bay of Bengal. It is geographically a cape and during the British rule in India it was known as Cape Comorin. On the way, you visit the Padmanabapuram Palace and stop for lunch at the Sangam Restaurant (a typical local restaurant) in Kanyakumari. After lunch visit Kumariamman Temple and Vivekananda Memorial.
Later return to the resort for dinner. Overnight at the resort.

Day 4: Morning at leisure – time to take in more massages, swim, or simply sunbathe.
Take a late lunch at the hotel and an evening stroll on Kovalam beach.

Day 5: Leave for a shopping trip in Trivandrum (with a visit to a specialist shop in order to purchase the famous 5 yard saris that all girls dream of).  Lunch at  Ambrosia, which is an interesting version of a fast-food outlet.

After lunch transfer to the International School on the outskirts of Trivandrum.
Prepare for lessons on the following day.

Day 6: Spend the day at the School
After dinner, visit the Craft Emporium and other shops around.

Day 7: Morning at the School.
In the afternoon visit the Palace and Temple and have an audience with the Princess of Travancore.

Day 8: Spend the day at the School

Day 9: After breakfast depart for The Deshadan in Varkala and arrive in time for lunch.
After lunch visit the local industries like coir making and toddy extraction.  Later walk along Kappil beach.
In the evening, an invited guest gives a short talk on Ganesha and other Hindu beliefs.
Games organised by the hotel.

Day 10: Visit the local market and purchase ingredients for cooking a typical thali dish under the guidance of the hotel chef. Later participate in a pooja at a local temple, subject to permission being granted by the authorities.

Day 11: Ride and bath elephants from the local orphanage

Day 12: After breakfast take a short tour of Lullaby@Varkala, a programme initiated by stakeholders from the tourism industry to assist local communities aspire for a better quality of life – an example of some of the initiatives sponsored by Avion Holidays and in keeping with the ethos of Responsible Tourism. The students get to spend time at the anganwadis (childcare centres for underprivileged families).
Later in the afternoon, leave for Kumarakom, a backwater village on the shores of Lake Vembanad. Check in at the Resort for an overnight stay.

Day 13: In the morning visit the bird sanctuary,  the rubber plantations and Kottayam town.

Day 14: Day Cruise on Houseboat from Kumarakom to Allepey with lunch, tea & snacks on board included. Visit local villages on the way. At Alleppey, board the coach for the one hour trip to Cochin.
Check in at the hotel in Cochin.
Overnight at the hotel.

Day 15: Spend the day at a local school where a welcoming presentation organised by the students of the school and European day by the English students.  Later in the afternoon visit the old town and the Jewish synagogue.
Overnight at the hotel.

Day 16: Visit Fort Kochi, the Chinese fishing nets, St. Francis Church, Mattancherry Palace and other sites around Cochin
In the evening, enjoy a Kathakali dance performance at the Cultural Centre with a presentation on the make-up and dressing costumes worn by the dancers.
Overnight at the hotel.

Day 17: Day at leisure and in the evening visit the local discotheque at a city hotel.

Day 18: After breakfast depart for the hillstation, Munnar and arrive at your hotel four hours later.
Overnight at the hotel.

Day 19: Take a day excursion and visit the area and a tea planatation around Munnar
Overnight at the hotel.

Day 20: After breakfast travel back to Cochin

Day 21: Check-out of hotel for morning departure from Cochin for London Heathrow.
